Man “very involved” with local GAA in court on cannabis dealing charge spared a 6 month prison sentence

Edward Kavanagh (38) from Mountrath who is said to be “very involved” in the GAA in his local community was handed a 6 month prison sentence suspended for 1 year after being caught with  €1760 worth of Cannabis (88 grams) .

The garda involved in the case told the court how on the 4th of May at 8pm they search Edwards home and found some cannabis in the microwave , a weighing scales, and a tic list. They later found a black bag containing more Cannabis at the rear of the house. In total €1760 worth of Cannabis was found.

The court was told that Edward had 11 previous convictions including 4 under the misuse of drugs act but despite this he is a “well liked man in his local area and is very involved in the GAA”.The court was also told at the time of the incident the defendant was using cannabis, held his hands up when approached by Gardaí and is no longer involved in that sort of behavior.

What the court wasn’t told however is that 1 of those charges is from July 2017 in a case where Edward Kavanagh in an “intoxicated state” threatened a woman with a manchette. For that case he was given a 6 month sentence with the judge commenting the man was responsible for getting himself intoxicated and he was lucky to not be before the court on a murder charge.

A six months’ prison sentence at Midlands Prison was imposed by Judge Catherine Staines in the case for the 88grams of Cannabis. This was suspended for one year, on the defendant’s own bond of €100.

The Judge warned Edward “If you come before the court again you will go to prison, do you understand?”

It’s a real pity Claire Freeman who was caught with €50 worth of Cannabis (2.5grams) wasn’t a local GAA star as she might of been spared the 60 day prison sentence. Good old Ireland and its two tier justice system.

Edward Kavanagh who threatened a women in a dispute about a puppy with a machete gets a suspended sentence for 88grams of Cannabis. 58 year old animal rescue volunteer Claire Freeman, who is on disability, caught with 2.5grams of cannabis for treating her pain gets 60 days in Prison.
